Absinthe is the spirit of the 19th century. Poets, artists, and intellectuals enjoyed this green liquor. What was all the hype about, and why was it prohibited in France in the year 1914? These are all stories that have a long history.

Let us introduce with the basic characteristics of this drink:

What is Absinthe?

Absinthe at that time and also nowadays is an anise-flavored liquor of high alcoholic strength. The prefered alcohol level was and is 136 proof. Ernest Hemingway has written the best tributes to the effect of real Absinthe. He fell in love with the Green Fairy on a trip to Spain in 1922. In Tarragona the Pernod factory produced Absinthe. Tarragona is a city close to Barcelona. In his book For whom the bell tolls, the protagonist Robert Jordan is having a belt of absinthe and some water with him. In the book somebody asks him: What is this and Robert answers "A medicine". "But what is it for?" "For everything. It cures everything. If you have anything wrong, this will cure it".

The effect of Absinthe is described with this generalistic terms. Absinthe, the Green Fairy, is like a medicine. In fact the herbal elixirs present in the liquor have some therapeutic effects. And Absinthe was invented by a doctor in the year 1792.

Besides the drink you need an Absinthe glass, an Absinthe spoon an Absinthe fountain and Absinthe sugar to prepare your Absinthe the proper way.
